On
a daily basis I speak with at leasr one victim of the 'in-house
website marketing expert' - the dabbler that spends time in
chat rooms and forums exchanging information, spam tactics
and tricks to get to No.1 in Google.
This Google trick is almost impossible to accept and I did
check the date, just in case it was April fool's day. It isn't
the first time I have heard it, but this cyber-myth has moved
from Chinese peasants to UK Paper Boys! This is how it works
(or doesn't); webmasters hire paper boys on bikes to cycle
around various Internet cafes, search for their prime keywords
and then click on the listing of the webmaster's site. I hear
you ask "How is this supposed to work?"
The theory is that over time and lots of bike ridings around
towns and cities, the listings go up because it increases
the CTR (Click through rate) and Google is tricked into thinking
that there is a massive high demand for this particular website.
My personal opinion ... and that of a genuine website marketing
expert is this; Google operates a click tracker and such results
are monitored and logged.
The
system is intelligent enough to flag repetitive and habitual
results. To achieve sufficient results to impress Google you
would need not one paper boy (or girl) but an army, and then
the sheer logistics of ensuring the click through is random
and not the predictable is near impossible and certainly not
cost effective.
