What is the penalty for duplicate content?
Strictly speaking there is no official penalty, that is to
say there is no 'fixed penalty' system, but achieving high
rankings with duplicate content can be bordering on the impossible.
I can hear the odd one or two claim to achieve top ranks in
Google, but believe me, it is temporary.
What is duplicate content?
The
obvious answer is when you have 'lifted' content from another
website, but web pages can also be deemed as duplicate even
if they are not 100% identical.
Why do search engines penalise websites for duplicate content?
Search engines filter duplicates because they want to list
only one version and not duplicate content on their search
result pages. They want to return as many different options
as possible.
How do search engines determine which web page will be gain
higher results?
Once it is deemed that the web page is duplicate content after
comparing it with other pages it begins a filtering system.
For instance, web pages that are hosted by known spam sites
will be the first to be removed from the search engine listings.
The next part of the search engine filter system looks at
inward bound links and will be sorted upon the quantity and
quality of inbound links.
The
web page with the most quality inward bound links is likely
to gain the higher results.
